NWC Develops South Seattle White Center Community Using the Power of New Low-cost Web Television

[South Seattle/White Center] As an outcome of our summer Minority Business and Youth Alliance participation with King County, Juvenile Court, Community Services Program, New World Communications engaged with displaced at-risk urban youth in the economically depressed community of White Center, teaching students how to develop their own community-based resources using the power of new low-cost web television to do 21st century journalism.

In this project, as part of their journalism class, and working jointly with excellent instructor Ann Magyar, students at New Start Alternative School, New World Communications outreached to minority businesses in White Center and produced informational stories about them. At the same time, students were taught to develop and practically apply career-oriented public relations and marketing communications skills for this excellent, high-visibility and highly practical workforce development application.

Students were taught how to produce a video magazine featuring provocative stories that promote these small businesses. Now that more positive relationships between youths and local businesses have been established, it will be easier for students to find jobs working with these business after school and in the summer. In addition, a whole new world of career possibilities opened up as students acquired powerful communications skills important to the economic future and quality of life in the region. Learning digital arts and doing something positive and creative is also great for downtown White Center's image as city re-inventing itself with a new vision.

A Comprehensive Approach is what New World Communications provided students with, in addition to acquiring conventional print publishing skills in this alternative high school journalism class. Topics include:

1) Media literacy, Critical Viewing ...and Critical Doing: Now, as an outcome of marketplace forces and technology changes, even the teaching of media literacy is now changing. Where in the past all that we could do was critical viewing to "de-construct" media to discover its "sub-texts" and hidden agenda, now we are talking about constructing our own media and crafting our messages with both subtlety and nuance. The critical viewing that we continue to do now increasingly focuses on the work of front-running peers...truly amazing!

1) Storytelling to build the brand: Now, more than ever, people and organizations need to hold the attention of their audiences by learning about and leveraging the power of structured storytelling to tell their own stories and to build their own "brand". Now it's marketing communications 101 even for these youthful members of the surrounding community.

2) Framing and Composition: New World Communications is introducing the language of visual communications to new learners and lessons about "The Rule of Thirds" are now being learned by newer, and less elite audiences, and the results that we are witnessing are truly impressive.

3) Lighting & Contrast: Understanding and practically applying the play of light and shadow lies at the very epicenter of producing quality media, and New World Communications is teaching this as part of the New Media Literacy. The practical result will be more impressive media that will influence key decision-makers and supporters, and hopefully down the road even new career opportunities if students can be motivated to pursue further study and personal development.

4) Audio Production: Although consumer video technology has its limits - e.g. no fancy external mics, and not even the ability to wear headsets, we are teaching excellent strategies for getting decent sound and for compensating for the degradation of audio during the uploading and compression process.

5) Logging, Uploading, Encoding, Editing, Titling, Sharing, Posting, and New Media Formatting: Now that people and organizations have a new way to log, upload, encode, edit, title, share, post, and format media - e.g. cell phones, iPhones, Touch iPods, etc., they need to learn about how to do it, and at the same time that New World Communications is learning the new approach, we are turning right around and teaching it...in a "just in time" kinda way. What a wonderful way to both learn and to teach!
