Some Provocative Transportation, Architectural, Business and Life Choices:
"Physical World" Buildings, "Virtual World" Buildings...or "Hybrid World" Buildings?
... that will impact the quality of our lives ... on this planet

[September 11, 2006] After a month of celebrating the design and development of our first New World Virtual Building in downtown [virtual] Seattle, and with the memory of 9-11 on our minds, it's time to do a little more "educational outreach" to our existing and prospective customers regarding some of the transportation, architectural, business, economics and quality of life choices that we now have in this now 21st century world of ours, and it all has to do with buildings ...creating a deeper and more lasting and more positive sense of security:
- "Physical World" Buildings : We all understand the beauty and grandeur of "physical world" architecture and what it allows us to do in terms of aggregating people and businesses all in one place and in terms of providing us with the ability to meet face-to-to-face with people to do all kinds of business...including the business of learning.
What we don't understand however is how dearly we are paying for the price of "physical world" business and learning architecture and all its associated costs - e.g all the time, cost to design, develop, build, maintain and secure buildings and parking facilities, all the transporation costs, all the work and "bottom line" productivity "hit", and all the quality of life issues involved with just getting back and forth to "physical world" architecture.
There are also the limited natural resource and major environmental issues. These are issues so critical, that choices made today now will affect whether people and organizations, and entire species of organisms will live or die in a not too distant future..and some life-species are already extinct now. The point we are making here is that "business as usual", with increased global warming and all...and concomitant political and social chaos is no longer sustainable and is not and cannot be "as good as it gets"....even though most folks - still unaware or ill-informed of newer 21st century possibilities - still believe that it is. This is basically because they haven't yet experienced anything different from what they know and are accustomed to.
- "Virtual World" Buildings : The good news is that now we can have all the beauty of grandeur of architectural design in Internet-based "virtual worlds" ...buildings that by utilizing the power of Internet conferencing and inexpensive webcams, you can actual meet "face-to-face" "inside" of ...to do all kinds of business ...including the business of learning....organizational development ...and implementing broad-based, positive social change.
These "virtual world" buildings can also be built in phenemonally less time and at phenomenally less cost, which means that the savings can be passed on to you as a virtual property owner or leasing tenant. Also in terms of the associated costs of time and money to "get there" and "get back" to these virtual buildings , what we are looking at here is a phenomenal savings of time and money, with a phenomenal unthrottling of productivity ... all of which can favorably impact the "bottom line".
In addition to the phenomenal business and economic advantages, the quality of life issues will also be something to write home about...while you are working from home...or from anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection...and the "transportation" that instantly "gets you there" and that instantly "gets you back", "riding the electrons" just by logging on and off....is faster than a rocket.
This "instant virtual transportation" costs not one cent to "travel" this way...it uses not one drop of fossil fuel, and it adds not one micron of pollution. Even entire mega universes of buildings can be be hosted on re-designed server farms using new cooler, multi-threaded web servers that put off less heat, and heat and energy that as an outcome, can be transferred, stored and utilized in more energy-efficient cost-saving and eco-friendly ways.
With less dependence on fossil fuel for transportation, you can even do life-saving emergency management and citizen preparedness training and world-class learning over IP television in these virtual buildings... including immersive language study and cultural exchange. We can use the technology to do affordable on-line focus groups and and engage in world trade that can create more political and economic stability... with the result being less senseless killing and social and environmenal chaos... We can meet inside of these buildings to design and produce the kind of IP-based media that a new and more hopeful world needs to see...and be...this is also great news for our entire world.
- "Hybrid World" Buildings : So what do we do, stop going down the road designing, developing and building "physical world" buildings? Do we stop investing in transportation planning and public policy decision-making that basically proposes more physical world transportation infrastructure investment? Do we all stay home and let our downtown business cores with all of its marvelous architecture grandeur become "ghost towns" of the past?
Definitively not, especially if today's existing commercial property owner and tenant learns about the "net new" value added revenue potential of "virtualizing" their physical world commercial and learning property... creating more business and learning access to their "physical world" property investements via real-time, face-to-face Internet conferencing and on-line learning that generates more business... not less. What we are talking about here is "hybrid" world buildings that are a combination of both "physical world" architecture and "virtual world" architecture. What is so provocative and lucrative is how little it actually costs and how simple it is to "virtualize" physical world space. Any physical world space that has Internet connectivity... your office, your board room, training rooms, conferencing rooms, conferencing room, emergency management logistical planning and training center, public health buildings ...can all be "virtualized".

"What we are talking about is not "giz whiz- future think" stuff.... but a powerful new world reality...that we can deliver right now", says virtual commercial real estate developer and communications consultant Art Johnson. He's also a new world educator.
"Our biggest challenge... and opportunity, is getting folks to experience the benefits first-hand, and the best platform for doing this will evolve learning and the use of multiple technologies that support effective learning. Then they can put 2 and 2 together themselves, and the world will change" he adds.
Today there are multiple technologies that can support learning, beginning with this use virtual architecture and internet conferencing itself... for experiential learning... learning that allows local, regional, national and international stakeholders to make their own decisions about the kinds of business and quality of life options that they prefer.
